Water colour on Bockingford 300gsm (140lb) Acid free paper.
Dated:
1st September 2004
Info:
This scene painted at a local beauty spot that offers disabled access, shows strong ambient light coming through the trees, throwing them into silhouettes with very strong high lights on one side. The use of only three colours helps in casting across the painting a sense of Weird strangeness, almost fantasy in nature. Hence the title and Price.

Just a short distance upstream, from the iron bridge walkway over the River Wharfe in Ilkley. The river turns left just at the point where the sun sets behind a thick band of trees. I have narrowed the river and raised the right hand bank slightly to give the river a more stream like impression (Artistic License) I have spent may hours here with my brother and have seen the sky turn from blue through many shades of orange, mauve, purple browns and subtle shades of red. The English Countryside at its best. Though just round the corner lays the hustle and bustle of Ilkley town centre.

A scene from my childhood. The river air passes through relatively flat land here on its way to Leeds. The boat, which was moored there when I was fifteen, was until recently still there; strange because the river is about 150 yards away. When painting snow it’s a good idea to add colour from other objects and the sky, Snow is never truly white. In my paint box I Carry a small piece of sand paper which I sometimes use to scratch out high lights on nearby objects. (Use this technique sparingly)

This scene painted from a sketch, done while in Black Carr Woods near Pudsey, with notes taken about the weird lighting that was present at the time. Notice how the shadows which all emanate from a point some where just below left of centre and fall in a slightly different direction, because of my proximity to the subject. The distance between the large trees and the ones in the distance was only about 10 yards. But by using fainter colours and a smaller scale distance and depth was created. I like this one and enjoyed painting it.

I was attracted to this scene across Lock Awe by the weird light coming through the clouds and catching the distant hills. The Pines and silver birch should have been in shade but there almost appeared to be a secondary light source reflected from the water and lighting up the shadows. The sketch I had made was put to good affect, as the lighting soon disappeared. It was enjoyable to paint.
